The Boscareto

Nature, vineyards, good wine, excellent food and an all-Italian welcome. These are the ingredients that revolve around Il Boscareto Resort & Spa. Located among the vineyards of the Langhe hills, in Piedmont, the Resort has reopened its spaces and welcomes guests in a new green setting. It is worth remembering that since 2014 the Langhe area, together with Roero and Monferrato, have become a UNESCO heritage site. In this context, the Resort constitutes a reference, at an international level, for experts in the sector. The starred restaurant and the luxury hotel also receive their guests for special events such as weddings and ceremonies.

Therefore, the project was born from the need to relate to the necessities of the Resort and the surrounding landscape, with refined and elegant lines, creating a soft and enveloping atmosphere. The inspiration came from the observation of the vineyards surrounding the Resort and their developments from above. The project mood, immediately shared with the client, offers visual continuity with the landscape, through the invention of “vegetable pockets” inspired by the shapes of the vineyards, set on the large terrace in front of the Resort, overlooking them. The romantic setting of the Langhe, the rolling hills and the splendid landscape aspects are the ideal setting to give guests moments of escape and relaxation.

The landscape project extends over an area of approximately 3000 m2 and proposes the creation of a green oasis immersed in the vineyards in which the guest, welcomed by an enveloping nature, can get lost and find himself. Patrizia Pozzi’s landscape studio was called upon to redesign the external areas following the burial of the car park previously located in the square in front of the hall. The interventions, divided into 3 phases, involve the construction of: the garden/parterre (completed in 2022), a solarium lowered through earthworks, connected to the spa, a heliport and a green mitigation of the garage structure.

From the early stages of the project, the desire to amaze and astonish the customers of the Resort was shared by the owners, both in terms of vegetation and project lines. Therefore, they wanted to play with the vegetation choice, with the shapes of the green pockets, which are different from each other, and with the splays to create multiple perspectives and visual cones on the landscape. The knowledge and experience of the Hw-Style company was fundamental for the availability of specimens of tall trunks, stumps with natural growth, coming from the Mauri nursery in Mariano Comense, all chosen for their spring and/or autumnal chromatic characteristics, and the presence of particular berries or blooms.

The project idea had to deal with the fact that the entire area was on a slab. This required the use of some design measures to ensure the planting and survival of the vegetation. In particular, together with the Harpo Seic company, specific packages have been studied for these conditions, capable of guaranteeing the survival of vegetation even on very thin layers of earth. The inclusion of specimens was also made possible using open-bottomed ring planters in corten-coloured galvanized steel.

The rings welcomed around 50 specimens grouped in “monospecific groves” of: Amelanchier x lamarckii, Acer polymorphum, Cornus florida ‘Rubra’, Cornus kousa, Cladrastis kentukea, Cornus nuttalii ‘Eddie’s White wonder’, Hamamelis mollis, Koelreuteria paniculata, Lagerstroemia indica (white and pink), Magnolia liliiflora, Magnolia x loebneri ‘Snowdrift’, Pseudocydonia sinensis, Prunus serrulata ‘Kanzan’. The specimens are all free form, polycormic and with a light habit to convey a sense of naturalness, as well as offering shading points and giving depth to the surrounding landscape.

The extensive flowering patches are made up of numerous varieties with light tones and soft colors including: Agapanthus africanus ‘Blue’, Anemone x hybrida ‘Whirlwind’ (white), Calamagrostis brachytricha, Canna indica, Deschampsia caespitosa, Echinacea purpurea, Euphorbia x martinii, Festuca glauca ‘Intense blue’, Gaura lindheimeri ‘Short Form’ (dwarf white), Hydrangea paniculata ‘Limelight’, Liatris spicata ‘Floristan White’ (white), Pennisetum alopecuroides ‘Little Bunny’, Perovskia atriplicifolia ‘Blue Spire’, Pittosporum tobira ‘Nanum’, Rosa ‘Cubana’, Sedum telephium ‘Herbstfreude’, Vinca minor ‘Argenteovariegata’.

The sought-after colors vary from the pink tones of the various herbaceous perennials to the intense red of the Canna indica that stands out against the green backdrop of the vines. Observing from above, the shapes of the parterre flowerbeds recall the subdivisions of the surrounding vineyards, offering visual continuity with the landscape. The romantic setting of the Langhe, the rolling hills and the splendid landscape aspects are the ideal scenery to give guests moments of relaxation.

Patrizia Pozzi

Much more than an office of landscape architecture, it is an open space towards the street, and thus capable of a continuous exchange between our world of ideas and the outside real life. The office of Patrizia Pozzi is meant to be the expression of a perfect balance between architecture and landscape, including the urban space. The district of Milan where it is placed – Porta Venezia – is one of the most lively and vibrant of the city. The office adsorbs what happens around and gives it back enriched by new vibrant energy, being a natural element in constant growth, mutation and evolution.
