Villa Camilla Park

by / tag , ,

The Municipality of Olgiate Comasco has undertaken an ambitious urban redevelopment project, investing over 700,000 € to create a new playground for children. This project was designed to offer a play area that seamlessly integrates with the surrounding natural and botanical environment, providing a space that not only entertains but also enhances the local landscape.

The historic villa, built in 1846 and housing the Sergio Mondo Municipal Library since 1998, is the cultural heart of Olgiate Comasco. The library serves not only as a focal point for the local community but also as a crucial coordination center for approximately 30 libraries in the western Como area, strengthening the regional cultural network and promoting reading.

The new playground is designed to accommodate children of all age groups, starting from one year old, and can host up to 81 children simultaneously. All the play equipment is made from black locust wood, chosen for its durability and its harmonious integration with the natural surroundings. The structures are set into the park’s natural slope, creating a playful landscape that stimulates children’s imagination and physical activity.

The park is divided into several themed areas to offer a wide range of play experiences. One area features a tower with a long slide and balance poles with a rope, designed to develop motor skills and balance. Nearby, the “witch’s castle” includes an ADA-compliant staircase and a double slide, ideal for younger children. The “wizard’s fortress” features an ADA-compliant staircase and climbing nets, suitable for older and more adventurous kids. Lastly, a theater-themed playhouse equipped with musical panels offers an additional opportunity for creative and interactive play.

This new playground not only enriches the recreational offerings of Olgiate Comasco but also exemplifies how public spaces can be thoughtfully designed to cater to all age groups, while fostering community well-being and cohesion.

Kompan

At Kompan, the mission has been clear and unwavering since their inception in 1970: to help clients build healthier, happier communities. Their journey began with a simple yet revolutionary idea, rooted in a deep appreciation for the role of play in a child’s development. The story of Kompan is intimately connected with the visionary Tom Lindhardt. Noticing the joy children found in interacting with his art, Tom envisioned a new way to integrate his artistic creations into play. Alongside co-founder Hans Mogens Fenne-Frederiksen, Tom founded Kompan to transform art into play. This innovation arose during the 1970s, when urbanization led to large, impersonal housing projects. Their philosophy is also reflected in their name: “Kompan” derives from the Danish word for “companion” and “lifetime friend.” They are dedicated to building vibrant environments that promote well-being and growth, guided by the belief that thoughtful design fosters healthy, happy communities.
