Tjørnegård School

by / tag , ,

The overarching goal for transformation of landscape surrounding Tjørnegård School was to create a schoolyard that doubled as a vibrant community hub, reinforcing the school’s identity and its role within the local area.

New and welcoming arrival areas

Previously, the entrance to Tjørnegård School was relatively anonymous and dominated by a large parking lot. The optimization of the parking areas has freed up a large space, which has been converted into welcoming arrival areas that naturally draw people from the surrounding area to the school grounds and vice versa.

Hill landscape with multiple functions

The new outdoor areas form a playful hill landscape with winding paths and varied play and seating areas. Along the facades, plantings have been established, framed by seating edges, creating seating niches of different scales. Edges, hills, and surfaces are designed together to support multifaceted play, rest, and learning. Around the central access area, the existing pergola structure has been transformed into a welcoming seating and activity space, offering covered seating with chess tables, among other things. A varied landscape has been created, catering to different needs – whether users want to be physically active, hang out, or do something else.

State-of-the-art basketball court

One of the schoolyard’s biggest attractions is the new, state-of-the-art street basketball court, developed in collaboration with StreetBall Consulting. The court is used by students, and after school hours, locals have access to the facilities. Additionally, the court serves as training facilities for the local basketball club.

The transformation of Tjørnegård School’s outdoor areas is part of “City Gardens.” The project is an overarching development strategy for Roskilde West, which MASU Planning won in collaboration with Cornelius & Vöge, among others.
